As much as I loved Charleston, I might have loved its
surrounding beaches more. And what I mean by that is Sullivan’s Island. We
spent our first full day in Charleston at Sullivan’s Island and had the best
day. The water was pretty and the sand was soft, there were plenty of people on
the beach but not so many that it felt crowded. We loved the fish tacos at
Poe’s Tavern and drinks at Salt. We craved the beach on Day 2 and thought we’d
try Isle of Palms, but after we crossed the bridge onto that island, we decided
that Sullivan’s had already become our island and kept driving until we reached
it.
We spent two full days soaking in the sound of waves and the
smell of salt. I imagined Teil Duncan standing on Sullivan’s with her
paintbrush and easel, soaking in those very same things. For lunch on our second beach day we
stopped at the most adorable hot dog stand, Johnny’s, and had a couple dogs with
the locals.
Speaking of dogs, they had a great time too.
On our last night in Charleston we had dinner at The Obstinate Daughter on Sullivan’s. It was a great way to end the trip. The restaurant’s
name pays homage to the island’s Revolutionary War history – the island’s
refusal to give up gained it a description of one of America’s ‘obstinate
daughters.’ You can’t beat a restaurant with good food and soul.
This trip was the relaxing, soul-rejuvenating break that we
needed. Until next time, Charleston! We will miss you.
